Chasing Sanitation: The Story of the "San Men"

Duggal Visual Solutions cosponsored This Is New York’s Strongest”, a photo and narrative exhibition, which will be showcasing the Sanitation Workers of New York.

For the past two years writer and producer Lisa Dowda and photographer Liz Ligon have captured intimate images and compelling stories that reveal the lives of the sanitation workers in New York.

Dowda became interested in the sanitation workers when she was waiting for a bus late at night in Brooklyn. The bus never came and so Dowda was left to walk home alone in the dark from Park Slope to Sunset Park. One of New York City’s thousands of “San Men” stopped working to ask her if she knew her way home and was O.K. Dowda had never noticed the sanitation workers before but after her encounter, she couldn’t stop noticing them. This is when she teamed up with Ligon to capture the NYC “San Men”.

“I found them beautiful and approachable,” Dowda said. “They are people who are funny and friendly and probably know more about your neighborhood than you do.”

After two years of Chasing Sanitation, Dowda and Ligon have raised enough money to put on an exhibit to showcase their work and the lives of thousands of New York City sanitation workers.

Duggal printed sixty 20”x30” and 16”x24” direct to dibond prints as well as an 8’ x 10’ vinyl banner, which will be on exhibit in Noho’s Landmark District at 411 Lafayette Street from February 12th-27th from 3-9pm.

The exhibit opens this weekend, with opening receptions on February 12th, 13th, and 14th from 6-8pm. Please RSVP to info@chasingsanitaiton.com if you would like to attend the receptions.
