Terra Flama: Stuart Palley’s Stunning Wildfire Project

Generally wildfires aren’t associated with art and beauty. But for one photographer, the past few wildfire seasons in Southern California have been the catalyst for a breathtakingly beautiful project.

Stuart Palley has spent the past few years capturing the visual stories of the California Wildfires, but in a stunningly beautiful way. Alley takes his camera out at night, and creates long exposures of the valleys and mountains ravaged by the flames.

The amazing thing about these photos is the all encompassing ability to capture the various parts of nature involved. The trees that are untouched by the flames, the rolling hills of the California mountainside, as well as the starry night skies gives a shockingly beautiful juxtaposition to such a destructive force.

Palley isn’t just randomly venturing into such a dangerous environment though. In order to ensure his own safety while completing his work, he took the US Forestry Services “Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior” course.
