Art Start Fills 9,000-Square-Foot Event Space with Student Portrait Projects
The beautiful, yet complex journey of self-discovery comes to life visually in New York’s Starrett Lehigh Building, where Art Start displays Volume 8 of its “See Me Because” exhibition.
Using artistic expression and the creative process to nurture the voices, hearts, and minds of historically marginalized youth, Art Start provides workshops, programs, residences and, above all, opportunities, with art serving as the starting point for personal and community development. “See Me Because” is the culmination of Art Start’s year-long program and platform for youth of color to establish their own narratives, explore their identities, envision their futures, and express how they want to be seen by the world.
The 2021 edition of “See Me Because” includes 3-D installations by the Art Start Portrait Project participants; live showcases by current and alumni Art Start Emerging Artists; and public creative workshops led by Art Start and visiting teaching artists alongside industry partners.
“The Art Start Portrait Project challenges the pattern that stereotypes, statistics, and circumstance should determine our youths’ existence, or that the identity that society has assigned them will be their one-dimensional reality,” said Johanna de los Santos, Executive Director at Art Start. “We believe that each individual has an autonomous and creative spirit which is inherently healing and liberating. With the freedom to explore, design and imagine oneself, the courage to believe, and access to the resources to create, we can profoundly transform how we identify and how we interact with our lives, futures, and each other.”
Duggal Visual Solutions is proud to co-sponsor “See Me Because, Vol. 8,” producing and installing an array of wide format signage, prints and vinyl graphics to help transform a large, landmark space in the heart of Chelsea, Manhattan, for the exhibition. Duggal CEO Michael Duggal also contributed a $10,000 donation to the cause.
