Two new outdoor exhibitions in South Bronx and East New York are uplifting the respective neighborhoods through the artistic talents of New York City’s underserved youth.
NYC Salt, a non-profit visual arts program, has year-round programming showcasing the work of its students throughout the city. The latest exhibitions are part of the new City Cleanup Corps (CCC) and Beautify NYC initiatives launched in 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic. The CCC aims to “directly create 10,000 jobs and make New York City the cleanest, greenest city in the United States.”
“Building an equitable recovery means investing in what makes New York City great: our people, our neighborhoods, and our open spaces,” said Senior Advisor for Recovery Lorraine Grillo. “The CCC will supercharge our recovery and help us rebuild a fairer and better city for New Yorkers in every community.”
Beautify NYC partner NeOn Arts offers young people on probation employment and skills training through the arts. The project empowers local stakeholder groups like NYC Salt to choose art projects for their communities—projects that engage young people and neighbors in strengths-based activities supporting educational and employment outcomes.
In addition to learning the fundamentals of photography and visual storytelling, NYC Salt students engage with their communities in creative and constructive ways through the camera lens. Most importantly, the students build a strong community amongst themselves, creating trust, support and enduring friendships.
