The Bellus3D Face Camera is an add-on camera compatible with Android smartphones and tablets, producing stunningly accurate photographs that can be 3D printed and shipped directly to you.
The device utilizes two proprietary and patent-pending technologies to create dramatically accurate 3D representations of the user’s face. DepthShape™ reconstructs 3D shape using two 1.2MP infrared sensors, explains Bellus3D, the venture-based Silicon Valley startup behind the camera. Meanwhile, “PhotoShape™ leverages mobile devices' high-resolution front-facing camera,” working in tandem with a 1.2MP color sensor, and two IR laser projectors to read over 500,000 points on a face to create an incredibly (and eerily) detailed 3D image capturing the user’s wrinkles, makeup and all.
Creating the image is as simple as holding the device out in front of you and turning your head from left to right. “The scans, which are available to view shortly after, are impressively accurate with incredible detail,” reports CNET. “The uses for dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and cosmetic surgeons are immediately apparent.”

Bellus3D also lists other applications on its website, including experimenting with new makeup techniques and clothing options, customizing a character in your exact image for your favorite game or VR world, and 3D facial recognition.
The product is set for release sometime in Q1 of 2017, but only to a limited number of developers and partners, as the company is interested in building out the technology and identifying other applications. The Verge reports that Bellus3D is hoping for a late 2017 release at $300. With any luck, we can only hope Bellus3D Face Camera is available to the public sooner rather than later so that we can all up our selfie games.
