The anticipation was palpable at beautiful Belmont Park, where California Chrome was on the verge of making history in the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner's bid to become the first Triple Crown champion since 1978 was spoiled by Tonalist as more than 100,000 people packed the stands and more than 21 million tuned in on TV. The anticipation boiled over into heart-pounding excitement. “And down the stretch they come!” – for $1.5 million, a parade of white carnations and the prestigious August Belmont Trophy. It was certainly a valiant effort by Chrome.
Belmont is “The Test of the Champion” for us at Duggal, too. Faith Young and Steve Pinello run with the NYRA team in preparing the 430-acre park for one of New York’s most iconic annual events. From welcoming banners and billboards to timeless Belmont images from official track photographers Bob and Adam Coglianese throughout the grandstand and clubhouse, this truly is “where champions are made.”
