Brooklyn Navy Yard Restaurants Artfully Under the Microscope in Steph Mantis’ ‘TASTEMAKERS’

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is one of New York’s hottest destinations for culture, cuisine and commerce. Working in collaboration with several restaurants opening in BLDG 77, Yard-based artist and designer Steph Mantis reframes our collective expectations of the food we eat by exploring key ingredients through a microscope.

“TASTEMAKERS is a show about food, but don’t expect to recognize your favorite dish at first glance,” the exhibition description reads. “By slowing things down, Mantis manages to gently coax us into a deeper consideration of what we eat.”

Brooklyn Roasting Company, Grandchamps, Jalapa Jar, Russ & Daughters, Rustik Tavern and Transmitter Brewing all participated in Mantis’ project, which consists of large-scale digital prints and small-scale sculpture. Duggal’s Faith Young worked with Mantis to produce the Plexi-mounted, high-resolution digital C-prints – the largest measuring at 4 feet high by 6 feet wide – seen in TASTEMAKERS. We also converted the images to countertop and window graphics.

Organized by the Exhibits and Programs Department of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation in collaboration with Mantis, TASTEMAKERS is on display at Yard Work Gallery in BLDG 92 through November 3, 2018. See photos from the show opening below, and click here to learn more.
