With the NYPD placing concrete and Jersey barriers along Fifth Avenue storefronts, the Empire State Building’s owners sought to dress the eyesores with something more visually inviting to visitors.
Always up for innovation, Duggal developed artistic barrier covers with a sleek pattern designed by visual director, Yvon Varunok. Production, led by Giselle Behrens, included two rounds of prototypes to arrive at a non-adhesive but rather drape-style final product for 11 concrete barriers and 9 Jersey barriers. The Jersey covers were deliberately produced shorter than the barriers to avoid the typically chipped ends and allow for a more secure attachment. See photos below.
