greatest imagemakers.
We invited image makers from across North America to submit a photo of one captured moment that, if selected, we would help them share with the world. The image provided had to record one unique moment of inspiration. The story it told could be abstract, concrete, internal or external – it was up to the artist to capture the moment.
We were inundated with fantastic images and we want to say a huge thanks to all who submitted their work for consideration. Our jurors had an incredibly tough time choosing from such a high caliber of submissions.

A resident of Asheville, NC, Eric Tomberlin, has been pursuing his interest in photography and art making for nearly twenty-five years. His work has led him into extended investigations ranging from the domestication of animals, to land use, to creativity and problem solving as they manifest themselves in contemporary culture. He has lived and worked as a freelance photographer, artist, and educator in California, New York, Texas, Washington, and India. His work is regularly exhibited both nationally and internationally, and it has received many accolades and awards. Eric received his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, and is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Trinidad, 102, having a laugh with her great granddaughter. Family bond is very important in Costa Rica, and might be one of the secrets of the inhabitant's longevity.
After obtaining a master’s degree with honours in photography from University of the Arts London, Arianne Clément travelled far and wide to find inspiration, often getting involved in humanitarian projects with the marginalized, her preferred subjects. She now devotes her work principally to portraying the elderly. Her celebrated portraits of seniors have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and won her several prizes, grants and honours. What these distinctions reflect first and foremost are the sensitivity and boldness of her work and the unique connection she manages to create with her models. Her pictures and stories were published in major newspapers and prestigious journals all around the world and her work was met with enthusiastic response online, creating a buzz in social media.
Houston, Texas. Mother and baby meet for the very first time. And the newborn finally meets the world it will be living in, and interacting with, for many decades to come. If there is an archetypical meeting, this is surely it. No rules of social distancing could possibly prevent it. Or would dare try. This meeting is the "mother" of all meeting points.
Amalya, a university trained journalist now focusing exclusively on photography, hails from Moscow, Russia. As a schoolgirl she roamed the streets of that peerless Slavic metropolis (not alone, of course), honing her black-and-white skills on Grandpa's cherished pre-war Leica. Upon arriving in the USA and before calling Houston home, Amalya lived for a number of years in Boston, Massachusetts, but she now finds that the southern, laid-back openness here quite agrees with her photographic predilections. There is no finer day than one spent behind the camera, putting her subjects at ease and capturing them in their finest moments, candid or posed. Photography is her passion, and there is nothing else Amalya would rather be doing at any moment. Amalya's photography emanates from deep within - motivated and inspired, above all, by her deep love of the art and for her subjects, and for capturing everything that is human in every image.
New Orlean, Louisiana. My work is concerned with capturing the relationship between the geographic and architectural structure of New Orleans in relationship to the culture that struggles and thrives with in it. In 2013, I noticed a group of African American women dressed in matching costumes shredding through the streets of New Orleans on motorcycles. After photographing them in motion out of fascination, I met Tru. Tru is the leader of the first all female African American motorcycle gang in New Orleans better known as The Caramel Curves. The Caramel Curves formed right before Hurricane Katrina. After the storm most of the members were displaced. In 2011 six original members reunited and brought the gang back together. The group crossed a boundary in the motorcycle world, which is predominantly male and white. They are under constant threat and scrutiny because they are black women. Today the club is 28 members deep and the women come from all walks of life, varying from strippers to doctors. The group is a sisterhood.
Akasha Rabut is a photographer and educator based in New Orleans. Her work explores multi-cultural phenomena and tradition rooted in the American South. Akasha founded Creative Council, a mentoring program for young people in New Orleans pursuing careers in the arts. Akasha’s photographs have appeared in museums and galleries around the world. In 2020 she released her first photo book with Anthology Editions - Death Magick Abundance is a collection of images that documents and celebrates 10 years of post Katrina culture.

Born in Paris in 1979, Jonathan Alpeyrie moved to the United States in 1993. He graduated from the Lycée Français de New York in 1998, and went on to study medieval history at the University of Chicago, from which he graduated in 2003. Alpeyrie started his career shooting for local Chicago newspapers during his undergraduate years. He shot his first photo essay in 2001 while traveling the South Caucasus. After graduating, he went to the Congo to work on various essays, which were noticed and picked up by Getty Images, and signed a contributor contract in early 2004. In 2009, Jonathan became a photographer for Polaris images and SIPA press as well. Alpeyrie has worked as a freelancer for various publications and websites, such as the Sunday Times, Le Figaro magazine, ELLE, American Photo, Glamour, Aftenposten, Le Monde, BBC, and today he is a photographer for Polaris Images, with whom he signed in February 2010. Jonathan Alpeyrie's career spans over a decade, and has brought him to over 25 countries, covered 13 conflict zones assignments, in the Middle East and North Africa, the South Caucasus, Europe, North America and Central Asia. A future photography book about WWII is in the works. Alpeyrie published a book with Simon and Schuster in October 2017. Alpeyrie has been published in magazines such as: Paris Match, Aftenposten, Times (Europe), Newsweek, Wine Spectator, Boston Globe, Glamour, BBC, VSD, Le Monde, Newsweek, Popular Photography, Vanity Fair, La Stampa, CNN.

Alicia Hansen founded NYC Salt, a photography and video nonprofit program for high school students in NYC, in 2008 and has since grown the organization to engage over 200 youth per year in rigorous visual arts education and college-preparatory programming, with college acceptance and graduation rates far in excess of national norms. She started a career as a professional photographer 23 years ago as a photojournalist and producer for editorial, commercial, and advertising projects for an array of clients. She holds an MA in Visual Communications from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and a BA in Journalism from the University of Georgia.
Stephen Frailey is the Editor and Founder of Dear Dave, magazine and his collection of essays Looking at Photography was published by Damiani Editore in 2020. He was the Chair of the Photography Department at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1998-2018 and is Chair Emeritus. In 2003, he founded the Auction for Photographic Education in Afghanistan to create a photography department at Kabul University. In addition to Stephen’s dedication to photographic education, he is a practicing photographer having studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and Bennington College. His photography is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston; the International Center for Photography, New York; and the Princeton University Art Museum, The Fogg Museum at Harvard University, and portfolios of the work have appeared in The Paris Review and Artforum.
Elizabeth Spencer is president of the Salmagundi Club, New York’s oldest art club. She is a painter herself as well as a popular art instructor. Painting and exhibiting for over 20 years, her education ranged from Carnegie Mellon University, and Parsons School of Design, to The Art Students League. She is a Life Member of the Art Students League and has studied with Max Ginsburg, Daniel Greene, Richard Pionk, Nelson Shanks, Peter Cox, Frank Arcuri and other notable artists. She enjoys working in a wide range of traditional and experimental fine art techniques and mediums. Elizabeth teaches painting classes both at Salmagundi and in her landmark 19th century studio on Union Square.
