Duggal Learning Events for Museum Professionals: The Big Picture

“I Am Still Learning” – Michelangelo, at 89 years of age

Great things happen when great minds come together to learn.  Duggal creatives and production experts are encouraged to set aside time to engage in conversation with leaders in the arts, design and the humanities, spend time with educators and students, pursue innovative technologies and most of all, never stop learning.

Duggal Learning Events for Museum Professionals, hosted and moderated by Marc Lovci, VP of Business Development at Duggal, has become one such opportunity to share knowledge, review the latest installations and shows, discuss new trends and technologies, and also refresh ones past learning on the fundamentals of design for cultural institutions.

On February 1, 2018 the Duggal Creative Studio in Chelsea became host of The Big Picture, a detailed exploration how the world-class, premium standard wide-format photography and images are produced.  Limited to 12 guests to encourage a conversational working session, in attendance were designers, directors, and curators from The Audubon Society, American Museum of Natural History, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, and Times Square Alliance.

Jerid O’Connell, VP of Duggal Creative Services, shared 30 years of experience of optimizing photographic assets. “One of your greatest and accessible assets in story-telling is a photo enlargement.  Unfortunately, most images are captured without the thought of its end use, or degraded within the first 20 minutes of a digital file being managed. The shame is the cost of time and money for the exhibition and lost impact for the audience.”

O’Connell led with a thorough review of photographic enlargements, from how-to and how-it-works to did-you-know and in-case-you-forget, complete with case studies, and even ‘Color 101’ – mixing paints and colored light to find true White. This was followed by a deep dive discussion in professional tips for maximum impact imagery, the nuts and bolts of file formats, resolution, and wide format printers. Intertwined were case studies, working projects, and discussions by representatives of all those in attendance and their own experiences. O’Connell also created a guide for understanding photographic industry specs and jargon called: How To Speak the Language of Photographic Enlargements.
