Vince Lombardi namesake of the NFL s Super Bowl trophy and arguably the greatest football coach of all time got his start at Fordham University, where he arrived in 1933 with a football scholarship in hand and a Brooklyn-sized chip on his shoulder. The kid from Sheepshead Bay excelled as a player at Fordham and would go on to attain legend status as a coach after leading the Green Bay Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls (1966 and 1967). In 1967, he received the university s highest honor, the Insignis Medal, en route to being inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970. In 2020, Fordham Football is raising funds to recognize Lombardi s accomplishments and leadership by naming a newly built football office in his honor.
