The Statue of Liberty: The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue was a gift to the United States from the people of France and is a female wearing a robe (representing the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas) with one hand holding a torch and the other holding a tablet with the date of the American Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) inscribed. The statue has become an icon of freedom and the United States.
The Statue is located on Liberty Island, south of Ellis Island and October 28, 2011 will mark the 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. After October 28th, 2011 the statue will be undergoing renovations and will remain closed for approximately one year, but Liberty Island will remain open.
