New York City Taxicabs: The first taxicab company in NYC was the Electric Carriage and Wagon company in 1987. Today, NYC taxi cabs are painted a distinctive yellow and are operated by private companies that are licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.
There are more than 13,000 taxis operating in New York City and "medallion taxis" (yellow cabs) are the only vehicles permitted to pick up passengers that are hailing a car from the street.
