New York Botanical Gardens: The Bronx is home to what many consider New York’s premiere garden collection and horticultural landmark, the New York Botanical Gardens. A National Historic Landmark, the Garden is home to 50 individual gardens and plant collections, which sit atop 250 acres of land. 50 of those acres are old-growth New York forest, where a variety of tree species live, and where many individual trees are over 200 years old. One of the Garden’s most striking features is the crystal-palace style, wrought iron framed greenhouse, which is now called the Haupt Conservatory. The Botanical Gardens is also home to one of the countries most important plant genomics research labs, where research scientists hope to answer the question of Darwin’s “abominable mystery”.
