Socrates Sculpture Park: New York City is defined largely by the creative output generated by a longstanding community of artists. Few places are as unique and engaging for the exhibition and experiencing of large-scale sculpture as the Socrates Sculpture Park.
Located in Long Island City, Queens, the Park prides itself as a facilitator for the interaction of viewer, art and space. Originally a landfill and illegal dump, the park emerged from the vision of sculptor Mark di Suvero and a fellowship of members of the community and artists. Not only are sculptures and installations exhibited in the park, many are also fabricated there by the artists as well. An ever-changing landscape of art, grassy fields, and a sun kissed skyline of Manhattan over the East River, the Socrates Sculpture Park is one of the New York’s most singular environments for the exhibition of the output of one the city’s defining communities.
