Students at Queens Metropolitan High School (QMHS) now enjoy a jolt of color and energy as they pass through the hallway to and from the cafeteria, thanks to artist Michelle Carollo.
Carollo, who has exhibited her bright, exuberant work across the U.S. from New York City to Miami to San Francisco and several other major cities—was commissioned by the New York City School Construction Authority to create a public mural in one of QMHS’ busiest corridors. Tasked with matching the pre-existing visual elements—namely a distinct floor pattern—Carollo developed a design that captures the college preparatory school’s athletic ethos and seemingly moves with the viewer.
Perhaps the greatest challenge proved to be the production and logistics, which took nearly a year to fine-tune. Duggal Visual Solutions’ Hope Savvides consulted with Carollo to develop a unique solution combining several materials. First, 13 panels of Vibrachrome to anchor the installation, laser cut to shape. Then, digital C-prints mounted to white Plexi for a dimensional effect. And lastly, protective lamination to seal the prints. Throughout the process, Senior Designer and Technology Advisor, Demian Cacciolo, contributed countless hours to make everything match up. The full piece spans more than 40 feet long, activating the space and engaging those who walk by.
“Duggal was instrumental in bringing the vision to life,” Carollo said. “We really challenged them, and they responded in every way. It was clear that we were in it together.”
Duggal congratulates Michelle Carollo on the long-awaited completion of her QMHS mural. See photos below and visit her website at www.michellecarollo.com.
