What do a massive alien spaceship, bulldozer, robot trotting to Frank Sinatra, real-life snow globe, model Irina Shayk and the rappers Migos have in common?
They were all part of Philipp Plein’s invite-only runway show-slash-rave at the Duggal Greenhouse during New York Fashion Week 2018. Known for being outspoken, edgy and extravagant, the German designer managed perhaps his most impressive event yet as he unveiled his fall 2018 collection inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard waterfront venue.
“Fake snow cascaded down throughout the cavernous venue as throngs of revelers pulsed to an ominous techno soundtrack from Ibiza’s Circo Loco DJs Seth Troxler and Damian Lazarus,” WWD recalled. “The earlier runway spectacle, which featured a performance by rap trio Migos and an appearance by model Irina Shayk in a skin-tight Plein body suit, was merely the beginning of what would become an all-night, high-octane rave dubbed by the designer ‘Space Invasion: Conquerer of the Universe.’”
Footwear News wrote that “there was a lot happening,” adding, “The spectacle, which morphed into an all-night rave afterward, was signature Plein: adventurous, outrageous, over-the-top and fun.”
GQ even called it “a show of epic proportions” while nodding to “an equally spectacular vodka and Red Bull-fueled after-party.”
As hosts and graphics producers for Plein’s artful anarchy, we have to say that we feel we were a part of something that could never, ever be emulated in terms of imagination, originality and the unexpected. See photos and watch a recap of the show below.
