It was an uplifting and encouraging evening for the journalism community as TIME Magazine honored those who have been targeted, assaulted and, in the grimmest of cases, murdered for their reporting. The publication hosted a gala at SoHo’s swank CAPITALE to recognize its 2018 Person of the Year, “The Guardians” against “the war on the truth.” Four individuals and one group separately, yet collectively preserving the power of free press around the world, The Guardians are:
• Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist who was killed inside the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul following his criticism of the Saudi crown prince. • Maria Ressa, the CEO of Rappler who has been indicted after contesting presidential policies in the Philippines. • Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, the Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar for exposing the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in the region. • The staff of The Capital, the Maryland newspaper that became the site of a mass shooting leaving five employees killed.
Duggal Visual Solutions set the stage for the event with large format graphics including 7-foot-tall freestanding TIME lettering and 24-foot-tall fabric banners, along with an 11-foot-long banner adorning the arch exterior of the 130 Bowery venue and a 30-foot-long press wall.
