What are Comp Cards and when are they used?

Comp cards or “zed cards,” as they are most commonly referred to, are a customary tool for models, just as 8×10 headshots are for actors and those whose image is integral to their career.  The cards serve as a standardized way for models to promote themselves, almost like a visual resume.

Composed on one side of the card is generally a headshot or a “beauty shot” (wow effect to pull in the client), and on the other side is a body shot or multiple shots that show the models versatility. Also included is personal information, or agent contact.  In the industry, they are a must for getting recognized by modeling agencies as well as casting agents. Presenting one, especially a well-composed one, is imperative and is a sign of professionalism.

In use since the 1960s, the formatting has been standardized to 8.5 x 5.5” card stock or A5 size paper in Europe. Information such as height, body measurements, shoe size, eye/hair color, and contact info are essential to clients and agents. The cards are so widely used because of this convenience and relatively cheap production cost. With recent advances in technology, people seeking to create a set of comp cards have many options to choose from, including layout, printing quality, and paper type among other things.

At Duggal, customers are are given many options depending on your budget. The creation of the card includes up to 5 photos scanned and retouched, layout/design of personal information, and test prints, with a turnaround time from 2-3 business days. Several card stocks are available at Duggal, all the way up to 130 lb Silk cover stock. To stand out further, you can add touches such as a hi-gloss, semi-gloss, or satin UV coating. All comp cards are printed on our HP Indigo 5500 press, which produces color accuracy previously unheard of in digital printing. If desired, custom sizes besides the standard 8.5” x 5.5” can be ordered. Call your sales representative or customer service today for  more information or check out our Focus on Fashion Book.
