The first New York Fashion Week was held in 1943 during World War II when people were unable to travel to Paris. It allowed workers in the Fashion Industry to be less reliant on the French for fashion inspiration and American designers were finally able to showcase their work.
Fashion week is held twice a year, once in the winter and once in the summer. Fashion week lasts one week in four fashion cities: New York City, London, Milan and Paris. The event allows designers to promote their latest collections in runway shows to journalists, buyers, celebrities, and socialists. Fashion Week defines what is “in” and what is “out” for the season.
