Platform Shoes: Platform shoes, also known as "disco shoes", are shoes with thick soles, at least four inches high. Platform shoes were worn in Ancient Greece to increase the height of characters in the Greek theater. Later, in the 18th century, they were worn by Europeans to avoid the mud and dirt of urban streets.
Platform shoes became very popular in the United States during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Today, women wear platform heels because they add height, are more comfortable than traditional high heels and they attract attention. Platforms come in a variety of styles including boots, espadrilles, oxfords, sneakers, dressy and casual sandals and can be made from a variety of materials.
