Socks: The earliest models of socks were made from animal skins and tied at the ankles. The Ancient Greeks and Romans would wear socks from matted animal hair in order to keep their feet warm. By the 5th century AD. socks, also called puttees, were worn by the holy Europeans to symbolize purity. Socks later became a symbol of wealth and often had ornamental designs.
In 1959 the knitting machine was invented and socks were produced six times faster than before.
Today, socks come in a variety of styles, lengths and materials including nylon, cotton, silk and wool.
