Initially, only one ring was used for an engagement and a wedding. Then in 1477, Maximilian of Austria gave an engagement ring to his beloved, Mary of Burgundy starting a tradition. Prior to 1477, wedding/engagement rings were either plain metal bands (iron for commoners/ gold and silver used for royalty) or less expensive gems. Today, solitaire are the most popular choice for many couples, but different gems are growing in popularity.
