Duggal would like to congratulate our good friend and longtime client Vik Muniz on the release of his new self-titled retrospective. With more than 150 color illustrations spanning the acclaimed artist’s entire career, Vik Muniz the book is a keepsake for any art enthusiast.
To celebrate the release of the new book, Muniz recently joined the New York Public Library and esteemed photographer/Museum of Photographic Arts Founding Director Arthur Ollman – who also authored for Muniz – for a discussion at the library’s main branch next to Bryant Park. The talk was part of a long-running Artist Dialogue series free and open to the public.
Muniz’s reinvention of famous artworks using unexpected materials (garbage, sugar, and peanut butter and jelly, to name a few) is partially inspired by his desire to challenge the viewer’s perception and what one associates with memory. One of his most recognized pieces is Double Mona Lisa (Peanut Butter + Jelly), from the After Warhol Series. We have all seen the original Mona Lisa, at least in photos. Likewise, most of us are familiar with the classic flavor combination of peanut butter and jelly. But by experiencing both together, we are encouraged to consider how the artwork challenges our recall, and re-examine what we thought we knew about both the subject and the medium.
Double Mona Lisa is just one of many intriguing works featured in Vik Muniz. To learn more about the book and order a copy, click here.
